EZTV – HIGH IN PLACE (CAPTURED TRACKS)

From the moment jangly opener “High Flying Faith” gets your attention (and it will, rest assured), the pop-rock listener is well and truly hooked. That experience sets the tone for the rest of this refreshing melodic rock album. Chockfull of memorable tunes, EZTV’s High In Place is a joy to behold. http://www.eztv.nyc/

FATAL JAMZ – COVERBOY (LOLIPOP RECORDS)

This is gorgeous epic 80s pop-rock that will fairly leap out of your speakers/headphones once “John Paul Gautlier” hits your ears. The guitar sound is primed so delicately between indie pop and anthemic rock (imagine Rick Springfield fronting The Smiths!) with forms so authentic, it is such a wonderful tribute to better days. Not forgetting the oh so appropriate synth backings that complete the nostalgic picture perfectly. http://alwaysfataljamz.com/

SAM EVIAN – PREMIUM (SADDLE CREEK)

Premium is right! Fans of the Velvets’ third, Big Star and Teenage Fanclub will fall head over heels for Sam Evian (another gem from the Brooklyn indie scene). Effortlessly likeable guitar rock songs fill up Premium and melodic rock can jump up and down and rejoice that it even exists! It’s almost as if 90s rock never went away. Lovely. http://www.samevian.com/

ULTIMATE PAINTING – DUSK (TROUBLE IN MIND RECORDS)

This London duo’s mission statement is to bring back the sights and sounds of 60s pop and on Dusk, the band’s third LP, Ultimate Painting fulfils its purpose with flying colours. Jangly guitars, sympathetic vocal stylings and era-evoking tracks like “Song for Brian Jones” and “A Portrait of Jason” fit the bill. Mid tempo songs with easy going tunes that find a nice balance between folk-rock and light R&B. http://ultimatepainting.band/

BLONDE REDHEAD – MASCULIN FÉMININ (NUMERO GROUP)

Weighing in at 37 tracks, Masculin Féminin compiles Blonde Redhead’s first two albums for Steve Shelley’s Smells Like Records released in 1995 (self-titled and La Mia Via Violenta), their period singles, extant demos, and radio performances across four LPs or two CDs. Raw and embryonic, the early music is more experimental in nature recalling Sonic Youth’s no wave stylings. Highly listenable noisenik jazz-rock nonetheless. https://blonde-redhead.com
