ALBUM REVIEW: WE ARE SCIENTISTS – HELTER SELTZER

we-are-scientists

Background
We Are Scientists is a New York City-based indie rock band that formed in Berkeley, California, in 2000. It consists of guitarist and vocalist Keith Murray and bass guitarist Chris Cain. Helter Seltzer is the band’s 5th album.

Strengths
Refreshing to see We Are Scientists move away from their early post-punk revival (re: Joy Division lite) sound to something that is more akin to 80s/90s pop-rock. A dynamic blend of futurist new wave and down & dirty 90s alt-rock with keen attention to melodic sophistication is a winning formula.

Highlights
“Buckle”, “In My Head”, “Too Late”, “Waiting For You”.

Sounds Like
Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinands, The Strokes.

Bottom Line
We Are Scientists dig deep to avoid generic indie pop cliches to deliver perhaps their strongest work yet.
