ALBUM REVIEW: THE JAYHAWKS – PAGING MR. PROUST

jayhawks-paging-mr-proust

Background
The Jayhawks are an American rock band that emerged from the Twin Cities music scene during the mid-1980s. Though stereotyped somewhat as an alt-country band, The Jayhawks’ music is finely balanced between country-folk and pop-rock. The new LP finds long term members Gary Louris, Marc Perlman, Karen Grotberg and Tim O’Reagan receiving stellar assistance from Mike Mills and Peter Buck from R.E.M.

Strengths
Less country-rock than preceding albums, Paging Mr. Proust finds The Jayhawks flying the flag for classic 70s rock ’n’ roll. An eclectic work that mines the various flavours that makes rock ’n’ roll so vibrant and yes, still relevant to genuine pop music lovers.

Highlights
Every single track is essential! But particularly partial to “Lovers of the Sun”, “Leaving the Monsters Behind”, “The Devil Is In Her Eyes”, “I’ll Be Your Key”.

Sounds Like
The Beatles, Crosby Stills & Nash, Neil Young, Gram Parsons, The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty.

Bottom Line
Amazingly, The Jayhawks may have delivered one of their best albums ever, thirty years after their formation! Highly recommended!!
