ALBUM REVIEW: POPINCOURT – A NEW DIMENSION TO MODERN LOVE

popincourt

Background
Popincourt is Olivier, a Frenchman in love with 80s British sophisticated pop. Building up his repertoire over a decade, Popincourt put together this album with a small team formed by people met at concerts, including Hervé Bouétard (Bertrand Burgalat) on drums & Ken Stringfellow (Posies) on bass.

Strengths
Channeling the finest erudite pop music of the 80s, Popincourt digs deep into the well that includes the inspirations of Burt Bacharach, Brian Wilson, Smokey Robinson, Paul Williams and Jimmy Webb. Popincourt spares no effort in making a pastiche that is as faithful to the original as possible. High on melody and comfortable in the easy listening bachelor space pad mode.

Highlights
“A New Dimension to Modern Love”, “The Things That Last”, “Happy Town”.

Sounds Like
The Style Council, Prefab Sprout, Crowded House, The High Llamas.

Bottom Line
For anyone who obsesses over shiny jazz-soul-funk-pop gems, this is the album for you.
