ALBUM REVIEW: MUDCRUTCH – 2

mudcrutch

Background
Tom Petty’s previous band (with guitarist Tom Leadon & drummer Randall Marsh) before forming Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. With Heartbreakers Mike Campbell (lead guitar) and Benmont Tench (keyboards) on board, the reformed Mudcrutch released an eponymous debut album in 2008. Thought to be a one-off, the band is back with a second album, appropriately entitled 2.

Strengths
Staunchly true to its roots, Mudcrutch delves deeply into country-folk rock ’n’ roll apologetically. There is a clear sense of nostalgia about Mudcrutch, with principal songwriter Petty, giving way to the other members taking the spotlight for their own songs. Not exactly ground-breaking but an excellent window into a lost musical world.

Highlights
“Trailer”, “Dreams of Flying”, “Beautiful World”, “Hungry No More”, “Victim of Circumstance”.

Sounds Like
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Little Feat, Roger McGuinn, The Band.

Bottom Line
Fans of classic 70s country-folk-rock will appreciate the faithfulness of the material. Good fun.
